121 Degrees

From London
to Shanghai

The Big question... why?

Hello, my name is James Finnerty and for a few years now I've dreamed of doing a big overland trip across the width of Eurasia and initially planned to do it on public transport. This was quite an expensive proposition and I was never really sure if a huge bus and train journey would satisfy my craving to go on an adventure, but, one day I discovered the world of bicycle touring.

It's one of those things that sounds crazy when you first read about it, cycling 10,000 miles across two continents, but after going through stacks of blogs of people doing this sort of trip I came to the conclusion that I could pull this off. I'm by no means athletic (I'm out of shape if I'm honest) but this hasn't stopped other people, just start slow and build it up seems to be the order of the day!

Also, in case you were wondering, the name of this site refers to the 121 degrees of longitude from London to Shanghai, just over 1/3rd of the way round the world!

I also want to divert the interest this trip generates towards helping out a charity that made a big differance to some friends of mine. Samuels Children Charity are a Lewes based charity providing support to families throughout the UK who are currently affected by childhood cancer. I hope to raise the sum of £5,000 from people who hear about this trip to help them continue their work, and to also keep me motivated throughout the challenges this trip will provide!
